Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar has found herself in hot water this week after it was revealed that she filed a joint tax return with one man while being legally married to another.
The Associated Press reported that not only did Omar file a joint tax return with her current husband while she was married to someone else, she also has refused to release her own tax returns despite repeated requests to do so.
“She has also been dogged by conservatives who have raised questions about her past. She came to the United States as a refugee from war-torn Somalia,” the AP reported. “In 2016, as Omar was running for a seat in the Minnesota House, conservative bloggers alleged she was married to two men at the same time. Conservatives also alleged that one of those men, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, was her brother — allegations that Omar called ‘disgusting lies.’”
Ironically, Omar has frequently called on President Donald Trump to release his own tax returns, going so far as to say that he is “required by law” to do so.
On top of that, it has just been revealed that Omar has a record with the Minnesota Police Department, as she was arrested for trespassing back in 2013. Making matters even worse for her, the accounts of her arresting officers portray her as a disturbed woman who is a habitual criminal.
Omar’s arrest took place on January 18, 2013 after an event at the Minneapolis Convention Center featuring former Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who was going to stay at Hotel Ivy. As he headed back to the hotel after the event, large groups of Somalis followed him, with Omar among them. The police report states that hotel staffers asked for assistance in clearing the area, stating that anyone without a hotel room key was not welcome on the premises and needed to leave immediately.
The responding officer said that while most of the Somalis were compliant, Omar refused to leave and became “combative” when approached by police.
“As she stood her ground and refused to leave, I took hold of her left elbow to escort her from the lobby,” the officer stated in the police report. “Omar then pulled away from me stating, ‘Don’t put your hands on me!’ Others in her group complied and began walking toward the front entry/exit door as I ordered and I managed to coax Omar out with them.”
Ten minutes later, the officer once again found Omar sitting in a different part of the lobby. As he told her that she would be arrested for trespassing if she did not leave, Omar “remained defiant” and continued to “argue.” The officer was then left with no choice but to arrest Omar, but when he told her to stand, she refused to comply numerous times. Finally, the officer handcuffed her as she stayed seated in a chair in the lobby.
“Omar was booked at [Hennepin County Jail] as I felt it was likely that she would fail to respond to a citation and she also demonstrated that she was going to continue her criminal behavior,” the officer said in the report.
As we reported yesterday, Omar is currently in trouble after an investigation concluded that she illegally spent campaign funds on travel. This makes it clear that not much has changed for Omar, and that she has not put her criminal past behind her.
